Lifestyle Redesign® Special Topics: Multiple Sclerosis

The Special Topics: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) course is designed for participants to obtain understanding of Lifestyle Redesign intervention for the MS population. Module 1 of the course will address population demographics and relevant statistics; pathophysiology, symptoms, and diagnostics for highlighted diagnoses; common comorbidities and/or precursors to diagnosis; functional and occupational impacts of diagnoses; and typical medical management of diagnoses, including multidisciplinary care. Module 2 of the course will address the application of Lifestyle Redesign core characteristics and core domains to the evaluation, assessment, and intervention care process for highlighted diagnoses within the MS population. Module 3 of the course will address program development and resources specific to supporting this population (e.g., national organizations, patient programs, support groups, etc.). The learning activity will provide the opportunity to apply Lifestyle Redesign concepts to a case study.


Learning Objectives: 
Following the course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the relevance of occupational therapy and Lifestyle Redesign in meeting the occupational and functional needs of the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) population.
  • Classify the role occupational therapy serves on the multidisciplinary team in serving the MS population.
  • Interpret the impact of health disparities and inequities, and social determinants of health on care access, diagnostic processes, condition prognosis, and health in the MS population.
  • Prioritize special considerations during Lifestyle Redesign informed occupational therapy assessment and evaluation process for the MS population.
  • Determine appropriate Lifestyle Redesign interventions when providing care for individuals with MS.
  • Apply clinical skills relevant to implementing Lifestyle Redesign interventions for the MS population through completion of relevant learning activity.

Schedule: 
This course utilizes a self-paced asynchronous format, meaning that participants are expected to set their own pacing for completing the course requirements within the 6-week period that the course is active. Participants should plan to spend approximately 3-4 hours on the entire course, including reviewing course lectures and completing the course assignment (“learning activity”). 

The course is divided into 3 modules, however, participants will only have access to a given module once the previous module has been completed (e.g. lectures have been viewed). All course requirements (i.e. learning activity and course evaluation) must be completed by June 27, 2025.

While synchronous (“live”) participation is not required, there will be 1 optional synchronous discussion session scheduled  to provide the opportunity for participants to ask questions, seek clarification regarding course concepts and terminology, and engage in problem solving for application of Lifestyle Redesign to varied practice settings.

Audience: This is an intermediate level course designed for OT practitioners who are interested in acquiring Lifestyle Redesign certification or accruing Lifestyle Redesign CEUs. 

Prerequisites: Successful completion of Core Course 1: Lifestyle Redesign Foundations in Lifestyle Redesign, Core Course 2: Lifestyle Redesign Intervention Delivery, and Core Course 3: Lifestyle Redesign Program Development, Implementation, and Evaluation.

CEU Credit: This course is 3 contact hours.
