Core Course 1: Foundations of Lifestyle Redesign®

The Core Course 1: Foundations in Lifestyle Redesign course is a paced asynchronous course designed for participants to obtain introductory understanding of the history, development, and evolution of the Lifestyle Redesign intervention framework. More specifically, the course will address core elements of Lifestyle Redesign; models and theories that inform the intervention framework; review of Lifestyle Redesign at the USC Occupational Therapy Faculty Practice; review of Lifestyle Redesign research spanning from the Well Elderly studies to recent publications; and Lifestyle Redesign informed evaluation, treatment planning, and goal setting. Assignments will assess the understanding of these concepts and provide opportunities to apply case examples to core technique utilization and evaluation processes.


Learning Objectives: 

Following the course, participants will be able to:

  • Justify the relevance of Lifestyle Redesign for meeting the prevention, health promotion, and chronic condition management needs of clients and health systems
  • Summarize the history of Lifestyle Redesign applications within and outside of the USC system
  • Distinguish Lifestyle Redesign core characteristics and the therapeutic techniques that support use in clinical practice
  • Explain the theories and models that inform the Lifestyle Redesign intervention framework
  • Interpret the evolution of Lifestyle Redesign research and published findings
  • Apply the Lifestyle Redesign intervention framework to evaluation, assessment, treatment planning, and goal setting processes

Schedule: 

This course utilizes a paced asynchronous format, meaning that it is designed with a set pacing to ensure each participant completes the course within the designated time frame allotted. Course assignments will have suggested deadlines to help participants progress through the course in a timely manner and complete all course requirements by the course closing date of October 24, 2025. Participants should plan to spend 2-4 hours each week reviewing course lectures and completing assignments.

The course is divided into several modules, which will all be available at the beginning date of the course and progressed through an adaptive release process. Participants must complete all required components of one module (e.g., lectures have been viewed, assignments have been submitted) before proceeding to the next module.  All course requirements (i.e.  lectures, videos, assignments, course evaluation) must be completed by the course closing date of October 24, 2025.

While synchronous (“live”) participation is not required, there will be opportunities to engage in optional synchronous discussion sessions, and communicate with instructors for questions and feedback, throughout the course.

Audience: This is an introductory level course designed for OT practitioners who are interested in acquiring Lifestyle Redesign certification and may or may not have foundational knowledge about this intervention framework.

Prerequisites: None.

Course Requirements: Participants must complete all course assignments and knowledge checks, as well as a course evaluation by the course end date to receive a certificate of completion.

CEU Credit: This course is 12 contact hours.  Participants must login and logout of the online platform to access course material(s).
